How to Make Yarn-Wrapped Hearts for Valentine’s Day Decor

My DIY skills have definitely grown over the years as we’ve taken on bigger, more complex projects. However, it’s nice to finish a simple craft.

This weekend, I made yarn-wrapped hearts to fill my dough bowl for Valentine’s Day. I put yarn-wrapped pumpkins in it for fall, so why not hearts?

I made some of these hearts several years ago for a DIY Valentine’s Day wreath, and I’ve been looking for other places to use them ever since. They’re just so cute and puffy!

Here’s how I made them:

Step 1: Draw the Hearts

The first step to making this simple Valentine’s Day decor is to draw a heart on a piece of paper.

It sounds simple enough, but it usually takes a few tries to get the shape and size I want. I ended up making 4 different sizes of hearts to fill my dough bowl.

After the hearts are drawn, cut them out.

Step 2: Turn Them Into Cardboard Hearts

Trace the paper hearts onto a piece of cardboard. I used the flap of an Amazon box, but whatever you have lying around will work – cereal boxes, foam board, etc.

I used foam board for the yarn-wrapped hearts on my Valentine’s Day wreath, and it worked great too.

Next, cut out the cardboard hearts.

This was my least favorite part of the whole process for me. It wasn’t necessarily hard, but my hand was tired after cutting out all the hearts.

Step 3: Wrap Them in Yarn

After the hearts are cut out, it’s time to start wrapping!

To get started, I tape the yarn to the middle of the heart and wrap the point to the heart first. The yarn never wants to stay wrapped around the pointy tip. It’s best to cover it first so that there is plenty of yarn on top of it to hold it in place.

Then just keep wrapping the heart in a random pattern. Try to wrap it vertically, horizontally, and diagonally.

Once the heart is full and you can no longer see any of the cardboard, tuck the end under some strands of snuggly wrapped yarn.

And you’re done!

Finding cheap and creative ways to fill my big dough bowl for every occasion has been fun!
