15 Garage Organization Ideas That Actually Work for Real Life

Since our PCS to Hawaii, we have been living on post for the first time in 7 years! We have a great house on Wheeler Army Airfield, but this garage is the smallest one we’ve ever had.

Since we’re DIY-ers and a semi-outdoorsy family, we have a LOT of different stuff to store in the garage. My husband does woodworking and repairs our vehicles himself. I refurbish furniture, which involves a lot of sanding and painting. Plus, we have the typical family stuff stored in a garage: camping equipment, beach chairs, lawn games, bikes, etc.

So, our garage is FULL! And it is a MESS!

We are trying to get creative with storage solutions and garage organization ideas. I’ve been scouring the internet, and these are the best ones I’ve found so far.

Pegboard Organizer

This is the first garage organization project we’ve made so far. It’s a pegboard organizer for our hand tools and clamps.

Before making it, all of these tools were in multiple toolboxes and bags. Which made it hard to find what we were looking for. Plus, multiple toolboxes and bags took up a lot of space on the work table. This pegboard organizer is a much better solution!

Bag Chair Storage

This homemade bag chair storage bin is a great idea! Our chairs are usually propped up in a corner or stuffed onto a shelf somewhere.

Between the Studs

Using the spaces between the studs of an unfinished garage is a genius way to store sporting goods! Our garage has finished walls, but I’m saving this idea in case the next one doesn’t.

Big Sturdy Shelves

We had big sturdy shelves like these in our house in North Carolina, and they were SO HELPFUL! There’s no space for big shelves in this garage, but it’s something I want to make room for in our forever home.

Tool Wall

This tool wall is very similar to the pegboard organizer, but looks sturdier and more customizable. I especially like the screwdriver and drill bit organizers.

Socket Storage

This socket storage in a drawer is so satisfying to me. This garage organization idea that we might be able to utilize at this house. Currently, all of our sockets are thrown in the top drawer of our work cart.

Hanging Socket Organizer

This is another way to store and organize sockets. It would be especially helpful if you didn’t have a drawer to put them in, but plenty of wall space.

Socket & Wrench Organization

This organizer hangs on the wall and stores both sockets and wrenches!

Lawn Tool Storage

Turning an old filing cabinet into storage for shovels and rakes is a brilliant idea! I’m definitely saving this for our future garage.

Pegboard on Shelf

Putting a pegboard organizer on the side of a shelf is such a great idea, especially for renters!

Drill Bit Organizer

This drill bit organizer tray is a brilliant idea! So much better than the 4-5 little boxes that are currently holding all of our drill bits.

Magnetic Strips

This magnetic strip attached to the front of a shelf is a genius way to store drill attachments.

Organize Screws & Nails

One thing that needs organizational help in our garage is the screws and nails. We’ve accumulated quite a bit of them over the years, and zip-loc bags thrown in tool bags just isn’t doing the trick anymore. This organizer looks like the perfect solution.

Power Tool Shelf

Currently, our power tools are stored in various places around the garage. And some of them are just lying on the work tables. It would be so nice to have a shelf devoted to just power tools!

This is another clever way to store the power tools, and it won’t take up any floor space! Plus, you get a ‘charging station’ and a place to store the batteries.

These garage organization ideas have me motivated to clean up our mess of a work area!
