How to Make Fall Flower Arrangements On a Budget

I’m a spring- and summer-loving girly, but I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t love the fall holidays. And one of my favorite things about the holidays is crafting and decorating!

This year, I wanted to make some fall flower arrangements. I found the cutest mercury glass pumpkins at 5 Below a few years ago. I’ve used them as candy bowls and candle holders, but I thought they would be cute with flowers in them.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any craft stores on the island of Oahu. (Ben Franklin doesn’t count because I can’t afford it.)

So, I had to rely on Wal-Mart for the flowers, but they turned out beautifully! Here’s how I made them:

Step 1: Get Your Supplies

This is what I used to make fall flower arrangements:

• pumpkin bowl/vase
• wire cutters
• rose & hydrangea bouquet
• sunflower & rose bouquet
• rose bush (light yellow/peach colored)
• pampas grass bush
• fall stem branches

You probably don’t need the extra rose bush. However, someone had pulled a couple of the roses off the sunflower & rose bouquet. So, I grabbed some extra.

It cost me around $30 for the flowers (but keep in mind that those are Hawaii’s prices) and $5 (each) for the pumpkin bowls. So, a total of $40 for both arrangements!

Step 2: Cut All the Stems from the Bush

To begin making the fall flower arrangements, I first cut the flowers from the bushes using wire cutters.

Make sure you cut the stems as long as possible. You can always trim them later if needed.

Step 3: Add Your Big Flowers to the Bowl

It would be easier to make these flower arrangements using a piece of foam at the bottom of the bowl. However, I don’t like the mess that foam makes, and I didn’t want to spend extra money. So, I’m just arranging these loosely in the pumpkin bowls.

Put your biggest flowers in the bowl first.

This arrangement has 2 big roses and 1 big sunflower.

Step 4: Add Your Medium-Sized Flowers

After your 3 big flowers are in there, start adding your medium-sized flowers.

For this arrangement, that was the hydrangea pieces and the smaller roses.

Step 5: Add the Small Stems/Fillers

By now, the fall flower arrangement should be looking pretty full. There may be a few small gaps, but that’s where we’re going to put our smaller stems/fillers.

For this arrangement, the fillers are the stems from the brown stem branches and some fall-colored leaves from the mixed bouquets.

Step 6: Add the Pampas Grass

The last step to this fall flower arrangement is adding 3 pampas grass stems.

I stuck them in the arrangement in a triangle, with 2 closer to the front on the side and 1 in the back.

And you’re done!

I was worried that flowers from Walmart would look cheap, but I think these look great.

After Halloween is over, I plan on turning the jack-o-lantern face around to the wall, so that all you see is the backside of the pumpkin. That way, I can use these arrangements all through November, too!
